Things that are bound to make my “?? Things that I did in ’06 list”

Well it’s only 12 days into the New Year, and I’ve already have situations that will probably make my year end list.

Dumbest thing I did in ‘06
I locked my keys in my car with the engine running and it took me two hours to get them out! As soon as I opened the door, the damn AAA insurance people came! Why would it take 90 minutes to come and unlock a car and I was in the city! I wasn't stranded on a road in the middle of nowhere! Naturally, I looked at him and kept going!

Things that I did in ‘05 that I said I wouldn’t do in ’06, that I've done in '06!
Okay, so I performed an act, ya know just for old time sakes…so what if it was only 9 days into the New Year. Damn it, I can’t quit quitting!
(don’t even ask what it was)

Spend less!
I decided that I would start bringing my lunch to work, well so far so good, but it’s day 4 of Campbell’s Chunky Soup and I’m all out of my Ritz Crackers. Thank God tomorrow is Friday! Friday will be “free eat day”, that way it fits in with Casual Friday!

Be more active!
I was playing ball once a week, now I play on two additional days. However, there's a cost to play, so I’m still trying to figure that one out while balancing the “Spend Less” goal!

All in all the first 12 days of ’06 hasn’t been that bad! Okay, so the twelfth isn’t over yet, but I’m going to remain optimistic.

Change, ya gotta love it!

You tell me!!

Ghetto or Resourceful

Growing up in my neighborhood families did a lot of things the best way they could. Lack of money was probably the one constant in my community, buying the latest product was definitely out of the question if you desired to keep that roof over your family’s head. However we all grew up and swore to never have to do those same things again, because we were embarrassed! Some of those moments or actions have been given a label and commonly referred to as being “Ghetto”, however I have to pose the question to you all; “Was it Ghetto or Resourceful?”

01. Making a wish sandwich!
02. Using pliers to turn the TV!
03. Having a screwdriver or any other tool other than keys to start up your car!
04. Using a face cloth in the bathtub as a plug!
05. Re-using pickle, mayonnaise, or mason jars as drinking containers!
06. Using cooking grease after it’s been used again!
07. Keeping the old TV and using it as a TV stand!
08. Using tape to fix any and everything!
09. Wearing underwear as swimming attire!
10. Using crates to support the bed!
Until next time...

Things men care about

Sports
Doesn’t matter if he’s an active participant or a viewer! Men enjoy sports and it doesn’t have to include a ball or puck! Give’em a rifle and some game to hunt…that’s right, that’s a sport to them as well.

Sex
Not to be stereotypical about my gender, but hell we love sex! It doesn’t matter how you phrase it, “Making Love” “Fucking”…it doesn’t matter! To the credit of my gender not all men enjoy all kinds of sex, for example; Oral...as in giving not receiving!

Hair Loss
Men care about their hair regardless of what they say!! No, George Constanza’s here! If you are losing your hair, please let it go! Don’t do the Taupe’s; the comb over; or the snicker bar wigs!

Sex
To have the pleasure to be with a woman is one of the greatest pleasures a man can have, especially if there are no strings attached! The “friends with benefits” is a concept that has come of age!

Video Games
Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo, it doesn’t matter. The old arcade game at the local store! The poker video game at the bar, we’ll even play that!

Cars
The attraction between men and cars is something special. Personally, I think women are just as bad, if not worse!

Sex
See two and four!

Power
This particular characteristic is something all men want rather they admit it or not! However, power in the wrong hands is not a good thing!

Prestige
Men would love to have prestige, just to be recognized so they can get the power and sex! If a man has status then he can be placed in a position of power!

Money
They call money the root to all evil, but without it you would probably do a lot of things in order to attain some! Unfortunately, most of those things may place us in a bad position!

Women
Hey, all this other stuff would be pointless if we didn’t have women, so we could impress them with our cars, hair, power, or money simply so we could have sex, oops I mean a meaningful and loving relationship!

Hip-Hop! When is it time to let it go?

I grew up with hip-hop when it actually had some consciousness to it! Then as I got older it seems hip hop has grew up to! Unfortunately, the rap part of hip-hop has seemed to taken a back seat to everything else. Remember, hip-hop has some principles behind them, such as break dancing, graffiti, scratching and rapping! While graffin' has evolved to another later and a few are benefiting off of the technological advances, it has become a lost art of hip-hop! Breakin’ or break dancing seemed doomed from its start because it was a dance style and as styles do, they go in and out! Scratching disappeared with the advancement of technology and most hip-hop beat makers deciding to use samples and a beat machine. Actually the only time you get to hear real instruments in hip-hop songs is if it’s an MTV Unplugged moment or some other special concert!

The so-called elements to hip hop are seemingly lost and not looking to be found! As a child of the early hip-hop movement, I did a lil break dancing; I listened to some albums that didn’t require a Parental Advisory sticker on them. Now you would be hard pressed to find any rap or rock album without a warning label on them. The songs used to be creatively put together! The artist was more of an artist. The videos actually went with the songs. The women were not merely ass shaking figures! With the other elements of hip hop seemingly gone, how long will it take for rap to gravitate to a more mature state? The lyrics in most pop rap songs are straight bullshyt! I recall when rap and pop were something totally different, but now rap for the most part has become pop! Where did we go wrong? I understand the financial aspect of the game, but what about the artist integrity for something that was once so honest? Hip Hop crossed cultural lines back then too, but it spoke to a group of underdogs, a group of rebels and misfits! Now that hip-hop has crossed so far over it doesn’t appear to be a remedy to this situation.

I guess I just figured since I was a child of this hip hop shyt, that as I grew the songs would grow too! Trust me I like some ole ignorant creative shyt too, but most of this shyt is just stupid….Unfortunately, it seems that the songs have gotten more immature than I could have possibly imagined. I use to love hip hop, but shyt aint the same…or is it that I’ve changed!

Until next time...

Any truth to these...

Even if these things seem stupid or corny, ya gotta admit, doing some of them actually makes ya feel better plus it just makes sense!

1 - Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully
( for instance, the bum on the quarter asking for a dime, give him twenty-cents and smile)

2 - Marry a man/woman you love to talk to. As you get older, their conversational skills will be as important as any other. (Let the church say "Amen")

3 - Don't believe all you hear, spend all you have or sleep all you want.
(Yeah, because you probably over heard that a new club was banging and spent all your money on drinking when you found out it was lame, but you still ended up sleeping at somebody's house that you didn't know before yesterday )

4 - When you say, "I love you," mean it
(See, when I say I love basketball, damn it, I do I tell ya! )

5 - When you say, "I'm sorry," look the person in the eye.
(After stabbing me in the back the least you could do is look me in the eye (a##hole) )

6 - Be engaged at least six months before you get married. Duh!

7 - Believe in love at first sight.
(You wouldn't believe it! The first time I saw the new basketball courts at the gym, I just wanted to...well, that's kind of a private moment )

8 - Never laugh at anyone's dream. People who don't have dreams don't have much.
(Oh c'mon! What about the dude that invented the Pet Rock? I guess he got paid out of that though!! )

9 - Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt but it's the only way to live life completely.
(Insert painful experience here)

10 - In disagreements, fight fairly. No name calling.
(Yeah, save the name calling for the bedroom, ya dirty lil thing you)

11 - Don't judge people by their relatives.
(Yeah, judge them by their car, house, bank account, skin complexion..ya know, the important stuff)

12 - Talk slowly but think quickly.
(Note: talking too slow, might make you sound like a retard...i'm guessing you have experience though)

13 - When someone asks you a question you don't want to answer, smile and ask, "Why do you want to know?"
( I wish a MF would)

14 - Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
(Yeah, so does getting on an airplane...AND)

15 - Say "bless you" when you hear someone sneeze.
(What if you're non-religious)

16 - When you lose, don't lose the lesson
(WTF: Okay, I'm still trying to figure that one out...if you lost, what did you win)

17 - Remember the three R's: Respect for self; Respect for others; and responsibility for all your actions.
( Okay, I'm not revisiting elementary again...Wasn't it Read, Write and Rithmetic? And they wonder why American students are behind!! Ya taught us ebonics in second grade)

18 - Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship.
(No, seriously, let the big ones do it for you)

19 - When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it. (Wipe your fingerprints off the murder weapon)

20 - Smile when picking up the phone. The caller will hear it in your voice.
(I do this at work! It saves a lot of time with these verbally challenged callers)

21 - Spend some time alone
( I'll leave you alone to think about this one)

Until next time...

They Shootin’

The New Year is here and Detroit is bringing it in with a bang and with sparks. Gun sparks that is! Not sure if you all heard, but Obie Trice (a rapper) was shot on one of the local expressways, but he’s all right! Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know a rapper being shot isn’t news these days, so feel free to say “And”! However, the issue isn’t really about that idiot, it’s more about the continuing senseless violence that has already emerged in my beloved city! Yeah, some shootings have happened in the suburbs, but with Detroit being the closest city with any kind of name recognition, the media labels those incidents as happening in Detroit as well.

In 2005, Detroit's 374 homicides amounted to more than 40 murders for every 100,000 residents. Baltimore had a similar murder rate, and New Orleans in the last few years has outpaced Detroit. But most larger cities had significantly lower murder rates last year. New York had about 7 murders for every 100,000 residents; Los Angeles had about 13, and Chicago had 15.

It was not even a full 24 hours into the New Year when two women were found shot to death in an alley! At a party thrown at a local hall, a 20 year old fired into a crowd and wound up killing a 27-year-old father. So, while the mayor makes promises of having “pride in the city of Detroit and the community coming together," and making Detroit a place "where children and families grow and flourish in clean, safe neighborhoods that give them access to the world." he must also make a realistic commitment on violent crimes and gun control! Political parties have used empty promises and tired rhetoric to persuade optimistic voters into placing check marks on ballots for politician’s personal agendas. While not all the fault can be placed on politicians, Detroiters must take a more productive and positive role in the very city they swear to love.

Hopefully things will be mild in regards to gun violence or violence on a whole, but being realistic about the situation doesn’t leave much to be optimistic about.

Until next time...

Super Bowl In Detroit

Okay, so we got about a month to go before Super Bowl XL (40) hits the Motor City! As expected the powers that be are making downtown Detroit look totally different than it has been, and that’s not a bad thing. Hopefully, the improvements to Detroit will go beyond the Super Bowl and stretch beyond downtown!

I can honestly say that most of the transition has been taking place for a while, but things have definitely sped up considering we are getting closer to the Super Bowl date! Hopefully everything will turn out nice without all the excess violence that the critics would just love to see!

When it’s all said and done, maybe Detroit can shed a tired image it probably doesn’t deserve, or create a new image that brings both images closer to reality! Honestly, Detroit is closer to a lot of other cities that are close to our size, unfortunately Detroit hasn't had to much to brag about especially the downtown. Downtown Detroit hasn't been vibrant since the riot of '68, but things have changed quite a bit. Now if the powers that be hit the neighborhoods with that same determination as they have done with the downtown area, maybe that old image can be shed due to citizens who take more pride in where they live, work and play.

If any of you are coming to Detroit for the game, let a brother know how you see things! See ya at Ford Field
